Dog Beach Tips for Owners | Dog People Are Cool

Dog Beach Do’s and Don’ts

Spring is here – this means warmer weather, longer afternoons, and your dog is anxious to get some sand on his paws at the dog beach. Whether you are in San Diego or another coastal city, a little research will uncover one of the most fun things to do with your dog: visiting a dog friendly beach to make the most of the warmer weather. Before you throw the beach towels, tennis ball, and leash in the car, there are a few things to think about to make for a successful and fun trip to the dog beach.

Do Invest in Dog Training

Before getting out to the beach, it’s good to know if your dog will play nice with other dogs. Dogs will typically feed off of the energy of others, and an environment like a dog beach can be overwhelming if your dog has not learned basic training.  A few obedience courses (as well as having a confident handle of your dog around others) will relieve your anxiety and make for a more enjoyable time for both you and your dog.

Don’t Go Off-Leash Too Soon

While most dog friendly beaches allow and encourage owners to take their dogs off-leash, it’s important to research the beach’s rules with the lifeguards or online. You’ll also want to make sure you have tested the waters ahead of time by practicing your dog’s off-leash skills at a park, around your neighborhood, or even in your backyard, so that you feel confident in your dog’s ability to listen to your commands when necessary. When you go to the dog beach, allow your dog time to settle in – there is nothing wrong with sitting on the sidelines until your dog is comfortable.

Do Socialize Your Dog

Similar to off-leash training with your dog, be sure to socialize your dog with others in a safe setting – in a backyard, and out at dog friendly places like outdoor coffee shops. Another tip? If your dog loves play dates with the neighbor’s retriever, see if you can arrange a time that works well for you to go to the dog beach together. Would you walk into a party alone? Probably not, so don’t expect your dog to show up to a dog beach and be the life of the party right away either.

Don’t Assume Your Dog is Perfect

While we’d like to think our pets are nearly perfect, don’t expect them to be on their best behavior at a dog beach. Keep an eye on your dog, to see that he’s playing nice with the rest of the dogs and their owners at the beach. It’s helpful to have a backup plan when you’re trying to get your dog’s attention – so don’t leave the house without your dog’s motivational item. Some dogs will come running for their favorite tennis ball, others need treats to encourage them to listen to you.

Do Wear Your Dog People Are Cool Shirt to the Dog Beach

Well it goes without saying… you’ll be the most stylish person at the dog beach in your Dog People Are Cool T-shirt.

A trip to the dog beach can be a fun afternoon that will leave your dog panting, wagging its tail, and with a few more friends. With a little preparation and our helpful tips, taking your dog to the beach may soon be one of your favorite things to do with your pet this spring and summer.
