Whether you’re a first time dog owner or have grown up with dogs your whole life, it’s always nice to reflect on fun things to do with your dog at the start of a new year. Why not make a resolution to spend more time with your dogs, especially when they get so much out of it too? We’ve rounded up seven different things to do with your dog, let us know if you’ve tried any of these activities or have other ideas in the comments below.
Roadtrip!
Sometimes all you have to ask your dog is: “You want to go for a car ride?” and they’re already waiting patiently at the door to go on a new adventure. Take a scenic drive up the coast or through a new part of town you’ve been meaning to explore. Plan your route out ahead of time so you can make a couple stops along the way – at different turnout points looking across scenery that would be the perfect backdrop to take some pictures of your pooch, or even at a dog friendly restaurant to refuel before the trip back home. Your dog will love spending time with you and getting some fresh air with the window rolled down too. What are some of the best trips you’ve taken your dog on the road?
Spend a Night Under the Stars
Camping with your dog is a fun way to get outdoors and enjoy quality time with your pooch outside the home. Make sure to double check that the campsite you plan on visiting is a dog friendly campground, to make your stay under the stars enjoyable for you and other campers. Your dog will love sitting around the campfire and stretching his legs outdoors, and cozying up to you in a tent.
Take a Hike
Depending on your dog’s level of physical activity, find a hike near you to spend some time exploring new trails with your pet. Since we live in San Diego, there are countless hikes to take your dog whether it’s around the Coronado Island Loop, or the popular Cowles Mountain there’s a hiking trail to please beginners and advanced hikers.
Dog Friendly Happy Hours
‘Yappy Hour’ is a newer concept that many restaurants with outdoor spaces are promoting in order to welcome customers and their dogs after a long day at work with food and drink deals. The Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel, California, is known to have one of the best Yappy Hours in the U.S. – but you can always find dog friendly happy hours in your city by searching online or calling ahead of time. Usually if a restaurant has an outdoor patio they’re more likely to host your dog as well.
Travel to a New City
Traveling is always a fun thing to do with your dog and maybe it’s because we’re located in one of the most dog friendly cities in the U.S. (San Diego), but there are surprisingly many hotels across the country that allow you to bring your dog with you on your stay. Some hotels are so accommodating that they will make sure your pet’s stay is comfortable by offering pet beds, treats, and suggestions for dog friendly activities. Often times, when bringing your pet to a dog friendly hotel it’s more affordable than getting a pet sitter, so be sure to check what the fees are at each hotel too.
Workout Together
Have you ever tried working out at home or outside and your dog instantly wanted to be included? There are actually gyms that offer classes designed for you and your dog, like Leash Your Fitness in San Diego. Some of the dog fitness activities include yoga, kayaking, and different classes to interact with your dog such as ‘Strut with Your Mutt’ and ‘Walking Woof Workout.’
Go Boating for a Day
When some dogs see an open body of water they can’t stop themselves from jumping in. Even if your dog isn’t a fan of swimming, you can test the waters and bring your furry companion on a boating excursion with you. Try renting a sailboat or a duffy boat and take in different sites with your dog for a change of scenery.
